On February 1, 2025, U.S. President Donald Trump issued an executive order published in the Federal Register, establishing the imposition of an additional 25% ad valorem tariff on all products originating from Mexico, for consumption or withdrawn for consumption from a warehouse. This tariff is applied in addition to any other duties, fees, taxes, or charges applicable to these imported items. Similarly, a 25% tariff will be applied to imports from Canada, except for the energy industry, which will be subject to a 10% tariff. Imports from China will be subject to a 10% tariff.
Impact on the Involved Economies
This decree will have direct effects on multiple economies. In Mexico, the industries most affected will be automotive, steel, textiles, agriculture, medical equipment, and general manufacturing.
In the United States, consumers will experience significant price increases for key products, directly impacting millions of families. The most affected products include:
- Automobiles: Impacting 12 million families, with an additional cost of $10.427 billion.
- Computers: Affecting 40 million families, with increased spending of $7.104 billion.
- Televisions: 32 million families impacted, with an additional cost of $2.397 billion.
- Refrigerators: An increase of $817 million for 5 million families.
Additionally, the tariffs will raise prices on supermarket products, medical equipment, and auto parts. The most affected states will be California, Texas, Florida, and Arizona.
Medium-Term Forecast
It is estimated that annual trade among the involved countries could be affected by nearly $2.3 trillion, with U.S. imports from Canada and Mexico potentially decreasing by nearly 70%, and imports from China dropping by almost 40% in the medium term. The purpose of these tariffs is to help fund the extension of the 2017 Trump tax cuts, which are set to expire this year.
Recommendations for Businesses
It is recommended that businesses review tariff classifications to assess the specific impact on each sector. Additionally, it is crucial to consider mitigation strategies, such as optimizing supply chains or leveraging existing trade agreements to reduce additional costs and explore new markets.
